Handmade Christmas gifts in Toronto: when to book your pottery class
Share
Handmade pottery is one of the most personal gifts you can give. The catch: clay can't be rushed. Here is how the timing works, so your gifts are ready before Christmas.
Why pottery takes a few weeks
- Making: you shape your pieces in a 2 hour class.
- Drying and first firing: the pieces dry slowly and get a bisque firing. You come back 2 to 3 weeks later.
- Glazing: you colour your pieces in a 2 hour glazing session.
- Final firing: the glaze is fired, and then your gifts are ready to pick up.
Put together, that is roughly a month or more from your first class to wrapped gifts. So book your making session in early to mid November, and ask our team for the current pickup timeline when you book, because the kilns get busy in December.
What to make
- Mugs and cups on the wheel in Try Wheel Throwing ($90, 2 pieces).
- Trinket dishes, planters and ornaments in Try Hand Building ($80, 2 to 3 pieces).
- Making several gifts? Extra clay is $10, including firing and glazing.
Missed the window? Give the experience
An OOTB gift card (from $50) lets them come and make something themselves in the new year. It is the easiest last minute gift in Leslieville, and it never arrives late.
